The sketchbook serves the artist most importantly as his or her tool for growth. It is where the artist develops his ability to see things, to advance his skill at recreating what he sees and expressing his evaluation of what he sees. As a record of drawings, the sketchbook gives the artist a view of his own development -- it shows him the errors and achievements of his past. As such, the sketchbook is an invaluable tool to be used and studied throughout an artist's life.
